WOBHC
WOBHC - Men's "B" Division History
Celebrating the 15th year of the event in 2010

BARRIE, ON – Oct 4, 2009 - The Men’s World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships took place at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club this past weekend with teams competing for the coveted Championship awards!  Teams competed in four divisions … Men’s “A” (open), Men’s “B” and “C,” and Men’s “Over 35.”  The tournament weekend was the final of three event weekends spanning six weeks as part of the “ballhockey.com” 14th Annual World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships.

This is a special year as the “Worlds” have been expanded over three themed weekends … Youth – August 28-30 at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club; Women’s & Co-ed – September 25-27 at the Niagara Ball Hockey Club; and Men’s – October 2-4 at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club.  Over the course of the three events ninety teams participated from all over North America … with more than 1300 participants competing for their share of the estimated $30,000 in prizes.

The action got under way on Friday, October 2nd as all three divisions took to the rink to kick things off.  The 36 team Men’s “B” pool would later be split into two divisions creating a 16 team pool to compete for the inaugural Men’s “C” championship.  Saturday, October 3rd saw an additional 48 games go in the books to set things up for the big games on Sunday!  The quarter-final and semi-final games on Sunday, August 30th saw some very spirited and close games as the event wound down and four champions were crowned in the afternoon for each division.  In all, 100 games were played to determine the champions in each of the four divisions being contested this year!

St. Catharines War Pigs Take the Men’s “B” Championship!

The toughest championship field in Men’s “B” World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships history was bested by The St. Catharines War Pigs.  The deep 36 team field was split after the preliminary round into two pools, with the top 20 teams staying in the Men’s “B” division and the bottom 16 relegated to the newly created Men’s “C” pool.  In the Men’s “B” final, the War Pigs prevailed over the Barrie Unknowns by a score of 4-2, including an empty net goal with 29 seconds left in regulation.  Team rep, Jay Capaldi, of the War Pigs netted the game winner with 3:51 to play in the third, and then set up the empty net goal to seal the win for his team.  Both teams had to persevere through tough semi-final games with the War Pigs defeating the 2008 Men’s “B” finalists, Kingston Raiders, in a shootout for the 3-2 win; and the Unknowns knocking out fellow Barrie team, Abusement Park, by a 3-1 score.  Several players from the Abusement Park squad have been in the Men’s “B” final four for the past three years but haven’t been able to finish the job.  Teams travelled in from Quebec, Ottawa, London, Kingston, Toronto, Timmins, Orillia, Hamilton, Burlington, Brampton, Parry Sound and Newmarket.  There were also players competing from several states in the USA.
