ST. CATHARINES, ON – Sept 28, 2009 - The Women’s A & B, and inaugural Co-ed World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships took place at the two-rink Niagara Ball Hockey Club, in St. Catharines, this past weekend with teams competing for the coveted Champions team uniforms and many other great awards! Teams competed in four divisions … Women’s “A” (open), Women’s “B”, Co-ed Competitive (open), and Co-ed Recreational. The tournament weekend was the second of three event weekends spanning six weeks as part of the “ballhockey.com” 14th Annual World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships.
This is a special year as the “Worlds” have been expanded over three themed weekends … Youth – August 28-30 at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club; Women’s & Co-ed – September 25-27 at the Niagara Ball Hockey Club; and Men’s – October 2-4 at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club. We are anticipating upwards of 100 teams to participate this year (from all over North America) … which translates into more than 1500 participants competing for more than $30,000 in prizes.
The action got under way on Friday, September 25th as four each division took to the two rinks to kick things off. Saturday, September 26th saw an additional 20 games go in the books to set things up for the big games on Sunday! The eliminations games on Sunday, August 30th saw some very spirited and close games as champions were crowned for the first time late in the afternoon for each division.
Toronto Crush Win Women’s “A” Championship!
The Toronto Crush returned to the 2009 World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships tournament to add to their very successful year in ball hockey (they were also the OBHA Provincial indoor Champions). The Crush, led by Robin Thompson’s seven tournament goals (and 10 points) and Silvia Traversa’s eight assists (and 9 points) were too strong for previous Women’s A Champions, the St. Catharines Rectangle Auto Supply and Barrie Canada Cartage Beavers. The Crush eliminated the defending World’s and North American Champion Beavers in the Semi- Finals by a score of 4-1, and then defeated the three-time Women’s A Champions from St. Catharines in the final game by a 4-2 margin. The Rectangle Auto Supply team defeated a very good Orillia Fury team in their Semi-Final game by a score of 3-1 on a late goal that broke a 1-1 tie with just over three minutes left in regulation. They cemented their trip to the Final with an empty net goal late in the contest.
