ST. CATHARINES, ON – Sept 28, 2009 - The Women’s A & B, and inaugural Co-ed World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships took place at the two-rink Niagara Ball Hockey Club, in St. Catharines, this past weekend with teams competing for the coveted Champions team uniforms and many other great awards! Teams competed in four divisions … Women’s “A” (open), Women’s “B”, Co-ed Competitive (open), and Co-ed Recreational. The tournament weekend was the second of three event weekends spanning six weeks as part of the “ballhockey.com” 14th Annual World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships.
This is a special year as the “Worlds” have been expanded over three themed weekends … Youth – August 28-30 at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club; Women’s & Co-ed – September 25-27 at the Niagara Ball Hockey Club; and Men’s – October 2-4 at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club. We are anticipating upwards of 100 teams to participate this year (from all over North America) … which translates into more than 1500 participants competing for more than $30,000 in prizes.
The action got under way on Friday, September 25th as four each division took to the two rinks to kick things off. Saturday, September 26th saw an additional 20 games go in the books to set things up for the big games on Sunday! The eliminations games on Sunday, August 30th saw some very spirited and close games as champions were crowned for the first time late in the afternoon for each division.
Niagara Mad Scramble Take the Women’s “B” Championship!
The Niagara Mad Scramble took their game to a higher level this year and came away with a 2-1 victory in the Women’s “B” Championship game. The Mad Scramble team narrowly defeated Barrie Sampson Dentistry in the thrilling Final. Carrie Gray paced the winners by scoring both goals, while Mandeep Singh replied for the Barrie squad. Barrie Sampson Dentistry sent fellow Barrie team, Flat Fee Realty, home after a close 3-1 Semi-Final game, while the Mad Scramble team dispatched the Acton Attack 4-0 to confirm their place in the final game. Many of the Mad Scramble players are in the twilight of their ball hockey careers and they finally won their coveted championship. Among their experienced roster was Canadian Ball Hockey Hall of Fame member, Oonagh Hastie!
