Learn to Play Programs

Ballhockey.com offers two learn-to-play experiences built for kids who are brand new to the game. Both are designed to do the same thing: teach the fundamentals in a way that’s fun first, so kids leave wanting to come back.

Looking for dates, times and pricing? All season information for our Fall 2026 season — including registration deadlines, start dates and available nights — can be found on our upcoming season page.

Rising Stars (Ages 3–5)

Rising Stars is our entry point to the sport. The focus is enjoyment, with the very basics layered in along the way: how to hold a stick, how to make a pass, how to take a shot.

Sessions are built around games rather than instruction. A typical night includes a few active games, a couple of simple hockey drills, and a scrimmage to finish — though our scrimmage isn’t the usual kind. We run multiple hockey balls at once so every child gets touches, and we’ve been known to throw a soccer ball into the mix just to keep everyone guessing.

What’s included:

  • 10 sessions, same night and time each week
  • A t-shirt jersey handed out at the first session
  • A graduation medal and pizza party when the program wraps

Most seasons we offer a choice of two nights. The available options change season to season and are listed on the registration page.

Under 6 Program (Ages 4–6)

The Under 6 program bridges the gap between Rising Stars and our youth leagues, which start at Under 8.

Each week splits into 30 minutes of skills and drills followed by 30 minutes of game time. Unlike Rising Stars, players are placed on teams with a designated coach who runs them through the weekly drills and then leads them into the game. Coaches self-referee throughout the season, and the final two games are played with a referee on the floor — a first taste of how our leagues run.

Not sure which program fits? We usually recommend starting with one season of Rising Stars. Our instructors specialize in working with young kids and know how to make a first experience with the sport a good one. That said, if your child is already comfortable with the basics and hungry for game action, Under 6 may be the better fit. Come talk to our instructors — they’re happy to watch your child and give you honest feedback. What matters to us is that your child develops at the right pace and, above all, enjoys the game.
