Tournament Restrictions Update: Rated Player Limit Reduced to Two Per Team

By Ballhockey.com-Monday 05 Oct 2026

Inside Men’s C: What WOBHC Weekend #2 Tells Us About Parity, and Why We’re Changing Our Rated Player Limit.

Men’s C at WOBHC Weekend #2 was one of the closest divisions we’ve ran this year. Of its 22 games, ten were tied or decided by a single goal. Both semifinals were one-goal games, one of them in overtime. The Niagara Lions won the championship with a 3-2 final over the Backdoor Bandits.

This division is also the latest data point in our Game Plan 2027 parity research. Together with what we’ve already learned this season, it has led to a change in our tournament restrictions.

Effective October 9, 2026, teams may carry a maximum of two rated players from the division above, down from four. Details are at the bottom of this post. First, here’s what Men’s C showed us.

Final Standings

Team Rated Players Record (W-L-T) GF-GA Finish
Niagara Lions 3 5-0-1 22-8 🏆 Champion
Backdoor Bandits 3 4-1-1 25-11 Finalist
Guelph Forge 2 3-1-1 25-14 Semifinal
Niagara Marvel 4 2-1-2 19-11 Semifinal
Niagara Storm 4 1-2-1 6-6 —
All Swedish 1 1-3-0 14-20 —
Buffalo Saints 4 1-3-0 10-18 —
Canise Carai 1 1-3-0 7-13 —
Toronto Leafs 0 1-2-0 7-20 —
Niagara Navigators 2 0-3-0 3-17 —

Records include the playoffs.

Does the Size of the Gap Matter?

Twenty of the 22 games were played between teams with different rated player counts. In those games, the team with more rated players went 11-6-3, a .625 winning percentage. That’s the softest result we’ve recorded in any division this season. Broken down by the size of the gap:

Rated Player Gap Record (Team With More Rated Players) Win %
1 player 3-3-2 .500
2 players 7-2-1 .750
3 players 1-1-0 .500

Win % counts a tie as half a win.

With a one-player gap, results were a true coin flip. The Backdoor Bandits (3) shut out the Buffalo Saints (4) 7-0. Niagara Storm (4) and the Bandits tied 2-2, as did the Lions (3) and Niagara Marvel (4). Both semifinals were one-player-gap games, and both were decided by one goal.

With a two-player gap, the team with more rated players had a clear edge, winning three of every four games. The three-player gap only came up twice, too few games to draw a conclusion.

Results by Rated Player Count

Rated Players Teams Combined Record Win %
4 3 4-6-3 .423
3 2 9-1-2 .833
2 2 3-4-1 .438
1 2 2-6-0 .250
0 1 1-2-0 .333

The most rated talent did not produce the best results. Teams with four rated players finished below .500 as a group, and two of the three missed the playoffs. Both three-rated teams reached the final. The Guelph Forge, with two rated players, went unbeaten in regulation through the round robin and lost their semifinal in overtime.

What We Learned

A one-player gap doesn’t decide games. This is now the second straight WOBHC weekend where that has held. Across both weekends, teams with one more rated player than their opponent went 7-8-4 (.474).

Larger gaps are where outcomes become predictable. Across both weekends, teams with an advantage of two or more rated players went 21-5-1 (.796).

Rated players aren’t the whole roster. As we saw at Weekend #1, goaltending, depth and chemistry clearly matter. A roster packed with rated players isn’t a guaranteed winner, and a well-built team with fewer can win the whole thing.

Our Rated Player Limit Is Changing

Starting October 9, 2026, teams may carry a maximum of two rated players from the division above:

  • D Division teams may carry up to two C-rated players.
  • C Division teams may carry up to two B-rated players.
  • B Division teams may carry up to two A-rated players.
  • The same one-level-up, maximum-of-two structure applies across all divisions.

The change applies to all Ballhockey.com tournaments held after October 9, 2026 (beginning with Blizzard Battle 2026).

With a limit of four, two teams could be separated by as many as four rated players. With a limit of two, that gap can’t exceed two, and most matchups will fall within zero or one, the range where our results have stayed closest to .500. This narrows the difference between rosters without over-regulating how teams are built.

What’s Coming Next

ballhockeyratings.com: In the coming weeks, we’ll update the roster builder to reflect the new two-player limit. Until then, please check your roster against the limit yourself.

Tournament restrictions page: In the coming days, we’ll update the wording on our tournament restrictions webpage to match this change.

If you’re registered for an upcoming tournament, please review your roster to make sure it meets the new limit.

Thank you to every team that played in Men’s C at WOBHC Weekend #2, and congratulations to the Niagara Lions. Your games produced the data behind this decision. As always, these are small samples, and we’ll keep measuring and sharing what we learn as Game Plan 2027 continues.
